In the early part of the last decade, FEP started work on a Proximity Detection System designed to reduce contact events, primarily aimed at the mining industry. And since September of 2004, FEP, FMC, and GMS have been at the forefront in developing proximity detection systems based on NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) developed technology . In November of 2005, a successful field trial was conducted at Consol of Kentucky Inc's Jones Fork E-3 Mine. The result was the first Proximity System approved by MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration).
Since that time, a host of upgrades to the HazardAvert system have been incorporated, and in addition to operating in the demanding mining environment, HazardAvert has expanded it’s coverage to include machines of all types, including Forklifts. Given the numbers of injuries and deaths related to contact events from forklifts and workers, one of FEP’s goals has always been a reliable and effective system to address these concerns.
Frederick Energy Products (FEP) was founded in 1995 by Larry Frederick and a number of his employees from NASA’s Space Program, and is located in Huntsville, Alabama along with it’s sister companies Frederick Mining Controls (FMC) and Geosteering Mining Services (GMS). All three companies were formed to provide products to the industrial sector using the standards and processes gained from years of NASA experience.
Larry’s resume includes Chief Engineer, Program Manager for Space Payloads, Department Manager, and System Engineering Manager. He also led a team of Safety and System Engineers that performed safety evaluations for Shuttle Payloads. Part of his early experiences included being a member of the test team that static fired the first Saturn Moon Rockets, plus he led major mission studies for space programs and functioned as a NASA spokesman.
